Everyone in and around Baltimore was shocked when they woke up on Tuesday to find that the Francis Scott Key Bridge had collapsed. There are so many layers to this tragedy. Not only did 8 people fall into the water (thankfully two were rescued), but this bridge is a major piece of commerce and general travel for the area. It's hard to express how important this bridge is to the American economy. It crosses the entryway to the Port of Baltimore, which is the second busiest in America. Some 34,000 vehicles cross the bridge everyday. Now all of them need to find a new path to get to where they need to go. It's collapse also halts a very busy cruise industry that docks in Baltimore.
This situation is going to be a real problem for a very long time as the cleanup and rebuilding process begins. We took some time to compile some of the dramatic photos from the collapse.
